Most fuel quality problems that show up at the burner actually start in storage. A few simple practices keep your fuel in the condition it was delivered in.
Tanks and bunding
- Use tanks built for the product, with proper vents, level indicators and drain points.
- Surround tanks with a bund that can hold the contents if a leak occurs.
- Keep the area around tanks clear and accessible.
Heating heavy fuels
Heavy fuels need heating to stay pumpable. Keep storage temperature only as high as needed — overheating wastes energy and can increase sludge formation.
Keeping water and dirt out
- Drain water from the tank bottom regularly.
- Keep manholes and vents sealed against rain.
- Clean filters and strainers on a fixed schedule.
Fire safety
- Display no-smoking and hazard signage around storage areas.
- Keep suitable fire extinguishers nearby and train staff to use them.
- Follow your local fire and petroleum storage regulations.
