As temperatures drop, heavy fuel oils thicken. Planning stock for the cooler months is less about buying more and more about making sure what you hold stays usable.

Why viscosity matters more in winter
Furnace oil and LSHS have to reach the burner at the right viscosity to atomise properly. In colder weather, unheated lines and tanks let the oil thicken, which shows up as poor flame, more soot and higher consumption.
A quick tank-heating checklist
- Confirm tank and line heaters are working before the first cold spell.
- Check that outlet temperature matches your burner manufacturer's recommendation.
- Drain water from tank bottoms regularly — condensation increases as nights cool.
